Cuba Connection

Some Sharing A New Song members attended a concert performed by Cuban musicians on Wednesday, October 5 at the MFA Remis Auditorium. Marcia Steere arranged for group tickets for SANS members. Following are Marcia’s comments about the concert.

“They were like nothing I’ve ever seen or heard! Their creativity made it so much fun. Harold composed and played some old Cuban music. He said he wrote one song while sitting in his car (not American from the fifties, but a Polish model).

“Ruy played the drums with the speed of a hummingbird’s wings, and then varied everything. It’s clear they have played since they were babies. They played double piano, changing places, maybe eight times, and used the piano as a drum after several stanzas. They were fascinating visually, too.

“We met them, and await their return. It’s possible that the entire Lopez-Nusra family will perform here, but these brothers will be performing throughout the world. They return to the US next month, but not to Boston.

There were more than 20 from Sharing A New Song at the concert and they (the performers, their agent, and the MFA) were all aware of our presence and interest. I spoke at some length with their promoter, and a board member from Berklee.” —Marcia Steere

Thanks to Pelle Wahlstrom, Marcia Steere, and Sandy Sherwood for making this happen. Pelle noticed this was happening, and remembered the connection of this family to Sharing A New Song. Marcia used her incredible bargaining skills, which many have witnessed while traveling with SANS; and Sandy used her keen business sense to help sell tickets.

Memorizing Music

In our effort to be the best SANS Chorus we can be, we are collecting tips for memorizing music to be off-book as soon as possible. Everyone learns differently, so we thought compiling different methods might be a help to those who really struggle with this.

If you have a method that works for you that you’d like to share, please send to Jane Arsham, jarsham@gmail.com

Black Binders

For those who have paid their dues, black three-ring notebooks are available from the SANS Librarians, Lissa Gilbert *and Patty Parker.*

Punching Music

Rehearsal this week will begin at 7 p.m. Please be prompt. We will rehearse until 8:45 p.m, and hope to go through the rehearsal without announcements. If there are announcements, we will send them by email on Monday afternoon.

If you arrive after 7 p.m., please wait in the back of the hall until a break in the warm-up or rehearsal before taking your seat.

New-Member Orientation Postponed until October 24.

In light of the change in Monday’s rehearsal times, we will not hold a new-member orientation on Monday, September 26. Instead, new-member orientation will be on Monday, October 24.
