2016 Colombia trip: SANS will be traveling to Colombia from April 15-25 next year, and it promises to be a thrilling trip. We will spend the first 4 nights in Bogota, Colombia’s vibrant capital city, which is surrounded by Andean peaks and steeped in colonial culture. Candlearia is the center of the old city; after our tour there, we will visit the Gold Museum, which is reportedly spectacular. There are many beautiful sights to see in this 300-year old city. Next we spend 2 nights in Villa de Leyva, a colonial village which has retained its old-world charm. Sited in a high valley, it has recently become a cultural center for wealthy Colombians and ex-patriates. En route we will stop at the Salt Cathedral in Zipaquira. Our last stop will be Cartegena, one of the Caribbean’s most lively cities. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, “a maze of cobbled alleys, balconies covered in bougainvillea, and massive churches,” according to The Lonely Planet. There is a strong African musical tradition in Cartegena, and we are hoping to make connections with local musicians while we are there.
During the trip, we will have at least 4 concerts, which are being arranged through our able guide Gerry, whom SANS travelers to Nicaragua will remember. In the past, some of our most memorable musical experiences have been through SANS members with connections to local musicians. We are hoping that some of this year’s travelers will have musical contacts in Colombia that we can use to enliven the trip further.
The SANS Trip Committee will present additional trip information at an upcoming rehearsal in October.
Hope to see you Monday, September 21 at 7:00!
