SANS Notes 11-06-15

Kilian Mooney:

We are happy to welcome back former SANS intern Kilian Mooney as SANS Assistant Music Director. Kilian sang and traveled with SANS in 2014 and we especially remember his beautiful solo in “You Raise Me Up”.

Colombia Trip Application and Trip Deposit:

If you are planning to travel to Colombia with SANS in April, please read the attached Terms and Conditions, get out your passport, and register at the following link: Trip Application

Applications are due next Monday, November 9, along with a $500 trip deposit. Please give your Trip Deposit (check made out to SANS, Inc.) to Lee Harrison or Joanne Lowry at Monday’s rehearsal. Or you may pay by credit card or PayPal online at in the Members section. Note that there is a 3% service charge for credit card or PayPal payments.

Scholarships for SANS Travel:

Scholarship applications will be available at rehearsal on Monday, November 9 from members of the Scholarship Committee (Anne Pearson, Joanne Lowry, Kathy Kolowich, and Laura Pattison).

If you plan to apply for a scholarship, please complete the Trip Application online at Trip Application and bring your deposit of $500 by November 9.

Because scholarship funds are limited, the SANS Board needs to apply stringent guidelines for scholarship eligibility. First-time travelers are prioritized along with (a) the need for a balance of voice parts, (b) musical contribution (including, but not limited to ability to solo or carry a section), (c) age and ethnic diversity, (d) other contributions to the organization, particularly in fundraising, and (e) need. We encourage scholarship applicants to be creative about finding support from family, friends, individual fundraising projects, etc., so we may apply available scholarship funds in the best interests of SANS. Applicants must show contributions to SANS to qualify for funds.

Scholarship applications are due by November 23 and scholarship awards will be made in December. If a traveler applies for a scholarship and does not receive a scholarship sufficient to make the trip affordable, the applicant’s trip deposit will be refunded.

Informational meeting for SANS Jewish travelers:

There will be an informational meeting for SANS Jewish travelers at 6:45 p.m. before Monday’s rehearsal, November 9. Trip Committee member Joanne Lowry and SANS President Kathy Kolowich will be present to answer questions you may have about the SANS 2016 April trip to Colombia.

In case you lose your music:

We recommend that you copy each piece of your music and leave it in a safe place so you will have a back-up.

Alternatively, you may order replacement copies of music at the websites listed at on the left side under "Fall Repertoire '15". Guantanamera and Yenyere can be downloaded and printed from the website.

Higher and Higher:

Carlee Blamphin, tenor, sent this message and link to spur us on in preparation of this piece. Unfortunately, the choral parts are hard to hear.

“A real inspiration for learning one of our new songs. Jackie Wilson was an inspiration for Michael Jackson because of his dancing. Was one of my favorite recording artists when I was growing up. Here’s the link: “
