Calling all SANS Travelers! At last Monday’s rehearsal, the Trip Committee summarized the trip that we are planning for April 15-25, 2016 to Colombia. Our agent, Latin American Concert Tours, is putting together a wonderful trip that starts off with a morning flight from Boston to Panama, and then on to Bogota, where we will stay for four days. Sited high up in the Andes, it is reportedly a beautiful old city, and we will tour and have a concert there. We will go on to Villa de Leyva, an old colonial town outside Bogota, where many Colombians have second homes, for two days, and we are arranging a concert there, and possibly a workshop as well. We will stop at the Salt Cathedral on the way to Villa de Leyva.

Our last stop is Cartagena, which we will reach by plane from Bogota. Its old quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is a Caribbean city, multicultural and exciting. We are planning two concerts there.

We are scheduled to come home on Monday, April 25.

We estimate the cost of the trip to be $3,200, the first deposit of $500 being due on November 9. By that time we will have a fleshed-out-itinerary to distribute to prospective travelers.

As we explained at the last rehearsal, we planned this trip to coincide with April vacation, not realizing that the first day of Passover is April 22, our first whole day in Cartagena. The Trip Committee is deeply sorry that this happened, and we have two alternatives to offer to our Jewish members. The first is that you can go home on the 21st, so that you can be in place by sundown on the 22nd, but you will have to miss Cartagena. The second is to celebrate Passover Seder with members of a synagogue in Cartagena.

Helen Bakeman reported on the Passover Seder that SANS members joined in Cuba in 2000, and said it was one of her favorite celebrations of Passover ever. One of our members, Yaffa Bibi, has offered to work on finding a congregation in Cartagena that would like to have a Seder with our members. We need to arrange this ourselves rather than have our agent do it, as anything they arrange would seem tourist-y rather than an authentic religious experience.

We will be sending you a link to an online trip application in the next few weeks, and we will have more details in place then. And please, if you know or have contacts to someone in Colombia who could help us with finding musicians we might join in concert, let us know. This is a new venue for us, and we are looking for great musical experiences!
