A Colombian Connection. Thank you, Yaffa! Yaffa Bibi has made a connection with a synagogue in Cartagena. They have offered to host SANS Jewish members for Seder on the first night of Passover, April 22. The synagogue is Centro Israelita Sefardi in Cartagena. It is an Orthodox congregation. Yaffa has spoken to and received confirmation from Rabbi Joaquin Montoya, who assures us that this will be a common Seder. Although there are several other synagogues in Colombia, in Bogota and other cities, there is only one in Cartagena. Their history may be found at the following link sent by Ann Silverman.

We planned this trip to coincide with April vacation, not realizing that the first day of Passover is April 22, our first whole day in Cartagena. The Trip Committee is deeply sorry that this happened. We have two alternatives to offer to our Jewish members. The first is that you can go home on the 21st, so that you can be in place by sundown on the 22nd, but you will have to miss Cartagena. The second is to celebrate Passover with members of a synagogue in Cartagena.

Pizza with the Soweto Gospel Choir:

The Soweto Gospel Choir (SGC) from Johannesburg, South Africa will sing at Symphony Hall on Sunday, November 15 at 3 p.m. The last time the choir was in Boston, in February of 2012, SANS held a reception for them at Symphony Hall after the concert. In 2012, Sharing A New Song travelers met them in Soweto, where we held a workshop with them.

SANS hoped to have a reception for them at Symphony Hall again this year, but the choir has to leave after Sunday’s concert to get to their next gig. Instead, we will host them for supper on Saturday, November 14, after their workshop with the Boston City Singers on Saturday afternoon. After the workshop, their bus will return them to their hotel. They will be ready for supper between 7 to 7:30 p.m.

SGC will stay at the Royal Sonesta Boston, which is on the Cambridge side of the river. The Cambridge Galleria is located across the street from the hotel. We will share supper at the California Pizza Kitchen in the Galleria mall. There are 20 members of the Soweto Gospel Choir traveling. We hope to have as many volunteers to share supper with them. The cost is $10 per person to help defray the cost of pizza. There will be a sign-up sheet at Monday’s rehearsal for those who are interested in hosting them for supper. It will not be a late night; the choir needs to rest before their big concert at Symphony Hall on Sunday.

Equal Exchange fundraising project: SANS has launched a fundraiser that is easy for us to sell, an easy fit with our values and tastes, and is timed right to provide great gifts for the holidays. Equal Exchange, the company that specializes in fairly traded, globally resourced goods, offers a fundraiser for organizations like ours that wants to raise money in a way that reflects who we are.

The link to the catalog is below. You can send it to friends and family, and use it yourself to stock up on chocolate, coffee, tea, handcrafted gifts such as beautiful scarves, gift wrap and jewelry. Items are fairly priced and SANS makes 40% on everything sold.

If every chorus member sells $100 (or more!), SANS will reach our goal of $3,000. Once you look at the products, you’ll see that it won’t be that hard to do.

The deadline for turning in your order forms and checks (made out to SANS, Inc.) is Monday, November 16th, 2015. Delivery of goods will be between December 7th and 14th.
