Memorizing Music

In our effort to be the best SANS Chorus we can be, we are collecting tips for memorizing music to be off-book as soon as possible. Everyone learns differently, so we thought compiling different methods might be a help to those who really struggle with this. If you have a method that works for you that you’d like to share, please send to Jane Arsham, **

Songs When You Need Them.

“Ysaye Barnwell and the Music of Community, Resistance, and Power” by Kimberly French

Ysaye Barnwell wrote the words and music for “Wanting Memories” in this year’s SANS repertoire for women’s voices. The article is attached.

New-Member Orientation October 24.

There will be a new-member orientation before rehearsal on Monday, October 24 at 6:15 p.m.

Chorus Photo, October 24

John Barstow will take chorus photos on October 24. Costume czar *Alan Rias* asks that we wear all-black to rehearsal. SANS will provide Turkish scarves, purchased in Istanbul in 2014. Scarves will be distributed at rehearsal from Genie Ware (alto) and Sandy Sherwood (soprano). Please return them after rehearsal. See Concert Dress below.

Concert Dress: Plain black (no sequins or other colors, no gray or charcoal gray), long- or three-quarter-length-sleeved shirt, black pants or skirt (below-knee length), black close-toed shoes and stockings/socks. No short-sleeved shirts or plunging necklines, please. Also, *please do not wear large earrings, or perfumes or scents, since some singers are allergic to scents.*

Cuba Connection

Some Sharing A New Song members attended a concert performed by Cuban musicians on Wednesday, October 5 at the MFA Remis Auditorium. Marcia Steere arranged for group tickets for SANS members. Following are Marcia’s comments about the concert.

“They were like nothing I’ve ever seen or heard! Their creativity made it so much fun. Harold composed and played some old Cuban music. He said he wrote one song while sitting in his car (not American from the fifties, but a Polish model).

“Ruy played the drums with the speed of a hummingbird’s wings, and then varied everything. It’s clear they have played since they were babies. They played double piano, changing places, maybe eight times, and used the piano as a drum after several stanzas. They were fascinating visually, too.

“We met them, and await their return. It’s possible that the entire Lopez-Nusra family will perform here, but these brothers will be performing throughout the world. They return to the US next month, but not to Boston.

There were more than 20 from Sharing A New Song at the concert and they (the performers, their agent, and the MFA) were all aware of our presence and interest. I spoke at some length with their promoter, and a board member from Berklee.” —Marcia Steere

Thanks to Pelle Wahlstrom, Marcia Steere, and Sandy Sherwood for making this happen. Pelle noticed this was happening, and remembered the connection of this family to Sharing A New Song. Marcia used her incredible bargaining skills, which many have witnessed while traveling with SANS; and Sandy used her keen business sense to help sell tickets.

Thanks to *Eric Solomon *(tenor) for producing the SANS Community Calendar. Events to post in the November SANS Community Calendar should be sent to Eric Solomon at by *Friday, October 28, with the subject line *NOVEMBER ITEM. Please submit brief items (3–5 lines) ready for publication, including the name and address of the venue; date and time of the event; cost; and a contact number, email address, or website. Thanks!
