SANS Notes 9.23.16
Welcome to all—new and former SANS singers. We look forward to an exciting year together!
Music and September 23 rehearsal start and end time
If you do not have music, please plan to arrive by 6:45 pm to pick up your music, so you can be ready to sing at 7 p.m.
Please Note: The first Presidential Debate is on Monday, September 26. While we believe rehearsal and attendance at rehearsals is important, so is civic-mindedness; presidential debates only happen every four years. Rehearsal this week will begin at 7 p.m. Please be prompt. We will rehearse until 8:45 p.m, and hope to go through the rehearsal without announcements. If there are announcements, we will send them by email on Monday afternoon.
If you arrive after 7 p.m., please wait in the back of the hall until a break in the warm-up or rehearsal before taking your seat.
New-Member Orientation Postponed until October 24.
In light of the change in Monday’s rehearsal times, we will not hold a new-member orientation on Monday, September 26. Instead, new-member orientation will be on Monday, October 24.
If you haven't paid your dues, please plan to arrive by 6:45 p.m. to see SANS Treasurer Jane Arsham before rehearsal. SANS annual membership dues are $265. Membership payments were due on September 19 ( second rehearsal) and may be paid at rehearsal with cash, check (made out to SANS, Inc.), or credit card ($5 additional fee). Dues may also be paid on the SANS website at sanschorus.org/members http://www.sanschorus.org/members/. Installment payments may be arranged with Jane Arsham. You may write to Jane at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Road Home
If you sang with SANS in 2014–15, please check to see if you have your copy of The Road Home. If you find it, please bring it to rehearsals; we will be singing it in our December concert.
If you sang with SANS last year, and haven’t returned Stars I Shall Find, please bring your copy to rehearsal.
From Lissa, SANS Music Librarian
There are two different-looking versions of Bullerengue, but the music is the same. Lissa will have copies of both available on the side table. You can decide which is easier for you to read.
Please look at the repertoire for this year. Send Lissa an email at email@example.com, requesting anything that you are missing. Lissa will make a packet for you and put it on ,the table with your name on it.
We encourage SANS chorus members to record rehearsals and review music at home to retain what we have learned before the following week’s rehearsal.
Following are SANS section leaders for 2016–2017. If you have questions about music, please ask your section leader, either before, during, or after rehearsal, or by email at the following addresses:
Louise Grasmere – alto: firstname.lastname@example.org
Tony Poole – bass: email@example.com
Carolyn Saxon – soprano: firstname.lastname@example.org
Kilian Mooney – tenor: email@example.com
Jonathan may assign assistants to the section leaders at a later date. For now, please ask section leaders any questions you have about the music. They will either answer you or ask Jonathan to assist with the answer.
Beginning next week, October 3, Assistant Music Director Kilian Mooney will arrive at rehearsal at 7 p.m. for those who come for extra help in anything music-related —a difficult part of the music, vocal assessments, general musicianship training, etc. Kilian is interested in helping people feel more confident about singing, so they can enjoy it even more. Due to early arrival to this week’s rehearsal, Kilian will not be available before rehearsal on Monday, September 26.
Please bring water and a pencil to rehearsal. Water may be refilled at the drinking fountain in the hall outside rehearsal.
Please turn volume off on cell phones before rehearsal begins.

SANS website is sanschorus.org. Passwords to the Members section of the website will be sent to SANS members sometime soon. The Members section includes practice tools, the calendar, copies of the weekly Notes, and soon, there will be a Members Directory. Please make a note of the name of the website, sanschorus.org; this name and your password will not be together in the same email.
While in Cuba in May of 2015, Sharing A New Song Cuba travelers shared their final dinner with Cubans Ruy and Sandra, and Wilmia. After dinner, Ruy, a master drummer, enjoyed playing drums with Louise Grasmere and Linda Shoemaker. Marcia Steere has maintained contact with Ruy and Sandra. Ruy hopes SANS will return to Havana and sing in concert with him. Sandra writes that Ruy also plans to play in Boston sometime. Ruy and Sandra recently wrote that Ruy’s sons, Harold and Ruy, will play at the Museum of Fine Arts Remis Auditorium on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. Harold Lopez-Nussa, pianist and composer; his brother, Ruy, a drummer; and Luques Curtis on bass will perform in Boston.
Marcia was offered a group ticket rate for SANS members of $15 per ticket. Regular admission is $25. Several SANSers bought tickets from Marcia at last week’s rehearsal. There may be time for those still interested to add their name to the list. See Marcia Steere or Sandy Sherwood at rehearsal. Marcia’s email is: firstname.lastname@example.org
