Words from SANS Scholarship Recipients

What a difference SANS has brought to my life! I am sincerely thankful for your generosity in making my SANS trips possible. I deeply appreciate the support.  My trips with SANS have had a profound effect on my life and continue to inspire me in countless ways to keep singing, sharing music and shining my light and love. I so look forward to many more experiences with SANS - healing hearts and lifting spirits in our challenging world.

Last year, I had the good fortune to be awarded a scholarship to travel with SANS to travel down south to Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery Alabama, Jackson and Clarksdale Mississippi and finally Memphis Tennessee. We followed in the footsteps of many before us, including the Freedom Riders and Civil Rights activists of the 1960’s. Some moments were super intense, like meeting with folks who actually participated in historical events including being in the 16th Baptist Church in Birmingham when it was bombed, speaking with people who were children involved in Bloody Sunday in Selma as they tried to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge as well as sitting in the courtroom where the murderers of Emmett Till were found NOT guilty. There were good times too, sharing music at churches and with students along our way! And of course there was lots of AMAZING FOOD! I had studied our history, read books and seen photos of these monumental Civil Rights moments but there was nothing like standing on that hallowed ground. I am grateful for this experience and opportunity.
